As California has come face to face with a gaping budget deficit that now tops $15.2 billion, its citizens have been confronted with a number of stark human statistics—from the number of teachers finding pink slips in the mailbox to the number of children who soon will be turned away by their doctors.
These are the stories behind those numbers. MyCAStory.org is an account of everyday Californians struggling to raise families, survive and succeed despite the looming threat of state budget cuts to the programs and services on which they rely.
These are your stories, told in your own words.
My California Story enables anyone to see and share the personal testimonials of:
Seniors who will have their health and safety jeopardized by reductions to In-Home Support Services that allow them to lead independent lifestyles and stay out of nursing homes.
Families of children with special medical and developmental needs who rely on California Children’s Services to guide them through the many medical and psychological trials that accompany their conditions.
Adults with disabilities who depend on staff assistance from In-Home Support Services to help them live their daily lives. Without this in-home help, many working adults could be forced into nursing homes.
Veterans who, after serving their country, may find that the state of California has failed to serve them. Elderly and disabled servicemen and women will be turned away by state veterans’ homes that have been forced to reduce the number of available beds.
Doctors who can no longer serve California’s low income communities because the already rock-bottom reimbursements through the state’s Medi-Cal program have been slashed even further. Medical professionals throughout the state will be forced to choose between staying in business and safeguarding the health of those in need.
And many more of the millions of Californians whose lifestyles and livelihoods will be put at risk by the reduction and elimination of the services they desperately need.
